Books I Recommend

New to this site: Books specifically relating to PCOS available from Amazon.com!

Books on Weight Loss & Proper Dietary Intake:

Drs. Richard F. & Rachael F. Heller have written some of the most insightful and easy-to-understand books on diet as it relates to those of us who suffer from insulin resistance and addiction to carbohydrates. Rachel is afflicted with PCOS as well, so she is more credible to speak on the subject (in my never-to-be-humble opinion) than any outside researcher. I had the pleasure and honor of meeting them both at the first annual PCOS Support conference in Baltimore in May of 1997. They are a delightful couple who are not only superb scientists but are also comedians in their own right. Their lecutures are educational in addition to being as entertaining as any comdedic act I have seen. I highly recommend the purchase of any of their books (without having read them all) knowing full well the integrity in which they have been written.

Dr. Barry Sears is the author of several low carbohydrate weight loss books, none of which I have personally read. I have, however, heard of many women with PCOS who have had success using his program.

Recipes for Health : Diabetes : Low Fat, Low Sugar, Carbohydrate Counted Recipes for the Management of Diabetes by Azmina Govindji, Jill Myers, Azimina Govindji, Elaine Messenger

The Low-Carb Cookbook : The Complete Guide to the Healthy Low-Carbohydrate Lifestyle : With over 100 Delicious Recipes Frances Monsoon McCullough

General PCOS Health & Well Being:

Anne McIntyre's The Complete Woman's Herbal : A Manual of Healing Herbs and Nutrition for Personal Well-Being and Family Care (Henry Holt Reference Book)

RW Shaw's Polycystic Ovaries : Disorder or a Symptom (Advances in Reproductive Endocrinology, Vol 3)

(The above is a highly technical and somewhat costly book which is aimed at more scientifically minded people. The language is often dry and difficult to understand, but I struggled through it and learned a lot about PCOS. It is helpful to be familiar with medical terms as they relate to PCOS prior to reading it.)

The Complete Guide to Women's Health Bruce D. Shephard, Carroll A. Shephard

Prescription for Nutritional Healing James F. Balch, Phyllis A. Balch

The following books I have NOT personally read yet :

Intraovarian Regulators and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome : Recent Progress on Clinical and Therapeutic Aspects (Annals of the New York Academy of Science) by George Tolis, Jacques Bringer, George P. Chrousos (Editor)

Polycystic Ovarian Disease (Clinical Perspectives in Obstetrics and Gynecology) by Walter Futterweit
