WISDOM, COURAGE,
SELF-CONTROL
PERSONNEL: Cubmaster, Webelos Leader,
Candidates, Parents. Drum beater, Narrator, Webelos, Den Chief.
EQUIPMENT: Headdress and blanket for
Webelos Leader, Fire, Arrow of Light badge, Drum, Ceremonial Board,
Story of Akela, Scout Vespers
SETTING: Darkened room or outdoors
after dark. Webelos Den Leader in costume in front of fire. Drum beater
giving soft steady beat in background. Candidates offstage. Ceremonial
board has one candle lit, the other seven unlit.
NARRATOR: Reads story of Akela (if
short on personnel this could be taped)
WEBELOS LEADER: Rises and raises his
right hand: drum stops. You, have heard the story of Akela. Will those
braves who are of Akela's tribe join me around the campfire (The Webelos Den lead by
Webelos Den Chief enters and forms a circle around the fire.)
WEBELOS LEADER: Tonight we have
braves who have earned the highest award in Cub Scouting - The Totem of
Akela - The arrow of light. The seven rays of the arrow of light stand
for the seven virtues - (Webelos leader to light candles one at a time
as he says) WISDOM, COURAGE, SELF-CONTROL, JUSTICE, FAITH, HOPE, and
LOVE. If you live by these great virtues, you will be a happy man, and a
happy man is a successful man.
Will the brave and his parents please
come forward. At this time our Cubmaster will present the awards.
(Cubmaster to enter from off-stage
and present award to parents who will then proceed to pin award on boy.)
After awards have been presented
Webelos leader faces the audience and says: "Let us end this
ceremony by singing the Scout Vespers Song." |
