Induction Ceremony

THE PACK SPIRIT CANDLE

EQUIPMENT: One central candle and one white candle for each of the new Bobcats. Magicians flash paper. Patches. Pins, Matches. Knife.

PREPARATION PRIOR TO THE MEETING: Light an extra white candle. It's hot wax will be used later in this process. Prior to the meeting you must prepare all of the candles. With the knife, carefully cut about 2 inch of wax from the tip of each candle leaving the wick. Next take a two inch square of the flash paper and roll it tightly until it is two inches long and only about 1/8 inch wide. Wrap the flash paper around the base of the wick of one of the candles leaving both ends to hang over the edge of the candle by about 1/8 inch. Make sure there is plenty of wick above the paper. KEEP THE FLAME AWAY FROM THE CANDLE IN THIS NEXT STEP!!! Now carefully drip a small drop of wax on the side of the candle at the top and push the two ends of the paper into the wax. You may need to repeat this step until the paper stops trying to unwind and is stuck in the wax. If you are using white candles the white paper will go unnoticed when the boys light their candle.

CUBMASTER: Before you is a candle. As with any candle purchased at a store it is no different than any other. Tonight we will make this candle special. Tonight this candle will represent the spirit of Cub Scouting which burns brightly in all of our hearts.

Will the members of the pack please come up and form a circle around the table.

Please hold hands and make the cub scout sign. To transform this candle we must concentrate our scouting spirit into its flame

Repeat the cub scout motto. "DO YOUR BEST" repeatedly until the sprit leaps from you and joins the flame.

This candle will light like any other candle and will burn like any other candle until it is filled with the Cub Scout sprit from all of you. (Light the spirit candle and wait till the flash paper burns)

Now we no longer have an ordinary candle. Our candle is now filled with the Cub Scout sprit.

Could I have our new Bobcat candidates approach the table with their parents?

Here is an ordinary candle. (hand each boy a special candle with the flash paper attached to the wick)

Tonight we will see if you are worthy of becoming a Bobcat. I will light your candle from the spirit candle and we will see if you are worthy. After I light your candle please repeat the cub scout motto repeatedly while concentrating on the flame of your candle. If you are worthy, your cub scout sprit will leap from you body and join the flame in your candle as did the other members of our pack. (Hold your candle upright and help the boy tip his candle into the flame of yours so that it lights only the tip. This way when he will not accidentally place the flash paper into your candle flame and ignite it too soon.)

I see that all of the boys before me are worthy of the Bobcat rank. Parents please pin your sons badge on his pocket upside down. It must remain this way until he has done a good turn. Then you may sew it on right side up.
