Here is the ultimate artificial
campfire!!! |

This is the biggest and least
portable campfire I have ever seen. It is also one of the best designs
where the audience is not allowed to see the back.
From the front the "flames"
look very very real. |

The secret to the illusion is the
gold foil covered drum to the right that rotates. Lights (one yellow and
one red below) shine on the rotating drum and reflect unevenly back thru
the red cellophane toward the audience. Since the drum rotates clockwise
it appears to the audiences side that the flames are rising from the
bottom of the fire to the top. |

To the right is a close up of the
drum and the motor that powers it. A simple shaft runs thru the drum
much like a rotisserie for a barbeque grill.
I had planed on putting a AVI video
of this campfire in action here on the site, but I don't have space for
the 17MB file. Sorry it's a shame these photos do not do this campfire
justice.
