Natural Foods

Before buying Frog Holler Farm in 1972, Ken had started a natural foods restaurant in Ann Arbor called Indian Summer. This was an expression of not only his belief in natural foods but his love of cooking in general. It was with lingering regret that he sold his share of the restaurant in order to concentrate on farming. Cathy and Ken met in the early days of Indian Summer and their paths merged as the farm and eventually the family became realities. Their emphasis from the start has been on organic foods and, except for Ken and Billy’s stubborn preference of turkey dogs over tofu wieners, the whole family is vegetarian. Ken and Cathy’s cooking has a foundation in macrobiotics, but the boys, particularly, do eat a fair amount of dairy. There is some little knowledge of herbs, homeopathy and other natural healing methods, and, thankfully, there have been few medical problems. The boys were all born at home and are not artificially immunized. These aspects of the King’s lifestyle have thus far clearly been a success. In the future they hope to continue sharing the fruits of simple living and to join other voices advocating natural wholistic practices. Perhaps the rewards of raising a young family in a natural environment will prove similar to those that will be experienced by an aging one!
