Ecological Responsibility
One of Ken and Cathy’s main concerns when creating Frog Holler was right livelihood, which strongly implied a proper relationship to the physical environment. Organic farming is a detailed, practical exploration of this relationship, with its emphasis on soil conservation and composting, its habit of crop rotation and its non intrusive methods. Homesteading alone tends to awaken and sustain ecological awareness; one does not pollute one’s own nest, and though it shouldn’t take private ownership of land to convince one that the earth is a fragile nest, it does drive home the point. Frog Holler is a increasingly rare example of ecological balance, health and beauty, and the Kings want to stay closely involved with the maintenance of this state. Proper management of the water, woodlands and soils is an integral factor in every activity on the farm. Also, Ken has written and spoken extensively on this theme. Some of his ideas can be found in the New Gaia, a journal of eco-philosophy, which he has edited and published over the past few years.
